The highlight of the enterprise lecture..

During yesterdays Enterprise lecture Bridget showed us this piece of moving image;




It's a decent piece of moving image, although not in the style that I've been working with it's still really interesting and works well. I do like roller coasters.

Packaging Inspiration

Although not DVD packaging I decided to look at some various types of packaging that I thought was quite interesting;

Although this is actually someones portfolio packaging it's still really different, works really well, like the way in which the different sections fold out and the little envelope in the middle as well. Great for adding loads of separate inserts.

This is really interesting, like the bit where you tear the label off and the different sections which you can move to reveal other areas is really interesting. Quite like the simple colour palette as it makes the 'aqua' colour stand out really well.

Quite a simple design in terms of the way it's folded but the design is really interesting, loving the orange and then the use of black in certain areas, really eye catching and stands out quite a lot.

DVD Packaging

Haven't really thought about DVD packaging yet so thought it would be a good idea to start looking at some different examples of packaging.

Some pretty high end packaging there, but then really interesting too, like the way the CD comes out, would love to find out how this is done! Thinking that I would like to use acetate for my packaging, mainly because of the way transparencies have been used throughout my sequence and idents, think it could work quite well.

Although its a average looking DVD case, think the design on it works really well. Simple colour palette and although it's simple, it does work really well.

Quite quirky packaging but then it does work really, like the cut outs in the main case, think that its quite interesting.

Given me some ideas as to what could work, looking forward to get some sketches done and thinking of some interesting ideas..

Moving Image.

Starting to look at some title sequences, end credits and other examples of moving image that is really quite good but could be easily re-created.




There is such simple movement in this - only certain parts change and their are parts of the sequence that are stationary but the music is well considered so it works well together even when there isn't much movement.

Cant embed the video for the end credits for Final destination 4 but it has to be one of the best end credits I've seen. Really interesting way of doing it and comes across as being really affective.




Although the Mission Impossible sequence uses video the way is included works really well, really simple but the timing of it is more or less perfect. Think that type like this could be quite effective as part of my sequence.

Casino Royale Opening Title Sequence

Got to admit that I hate the film but quite a cool opening sequence, quite different - a lot of different ideas together but again it is the music that ties everything in together.




Spider-Man title sequence.
Really like the typography and the way in which it is animated works quite well, again it is timed well with the music. Quite effective with the background as it changes quite subtly.




Metropolis Title Sequence.
Alway wondered how this type of animation is created, really effective and quite simple, just need to work out how it's done. Again quite simple and subtle movements with the type.




Strangers on a Train.
This is epic. So Simple but looks s good at the same time. Like the simplified colour palette doesn't appear to be too distracted as there isn't too many colours.




Independent feature film Savage
Such a interesting title sequence, really simple movements between frames and again finding that a simplified colour palette works much better as it doesn't appear to be too distracting and as with all the others the music fits into quite well.

Top Ten Fastest Roller coasters. POV.

Got POV videos for the top ten fastest roller coasters. Using these as a source within my sequences. Easy to draw from but also going to be incorporated within my sequence. Already used some of the stills within the 10 second idents and felt that they have worked really well. By layering textures over the stills created a better effect but also keeps the colour consistent throughout as well.

Roller coasters / Design / Posters / Prints

Decided to look at some posters and prints of roller coasters as inspiration.

Not sure what it is about these posters but they're really interesting, not entirely relevant with the aesthetic of my work but still quite quirky.. glad I had the chance to look at them!

Various Idents

Looking at some random idents that I really like, not channel specific or anything.



Loving stuff by ManVSMachine. Some really nice by work them. Would love to know how they created them. Like the one with the molecules appearing. and the one with the powder paint as well.

Nickelodeon idents



These idents are actually amazing, really innovative and they work quite well. Like the fact that there is music all the way through and just really focusing on the specific sound affects. Represent the brand really well.

MTV idents



These are probably the best idents I've seen that sync audio and visual together, each movement of the animated characters is timed perfectly with the sound. Really effective.

Spine TV idents



Pure vector based animation. Since working in AE when ever I watch vector based moving image I realise just how easily they can be created in the sense that the movements are created are so simple but really effective at the same time.

Branding a entirely new channel. Klang.



Great to see the branding of the channel as well as the idents and the intro to the show as well. Really like the type used and the way in which it is animated is really interesting as well. A great concept.

Motion graphics examples

Motion Graphics. Looking at some different examples of motion graphics.

 

Really like the one above as it's all done in After effects which gives you an idea of exactly of all the different things you can achieve using the software.

 

Got to love a bit of kinetic type. Really like how well the type is synced with the audio. perfect.




Such a simple piece of animation, works really well and quite engaging too. makes me realise how simple motion can create something that is really quite interesting.

TV Idents

Various TV idents
Started to look for some random tv idents that i thought worked quite well.



Iconic channel 4 idents. No idea how they created these but still some of my favourites.



A really interesting way of creating a ident. Could work quite well with the imagery that I have and using the channel 5 logo, not sure how well it would work considering the channel 5 logo isn't really made up of that many components.





Really interesting BBC 2 idents. Make the brand easily recognisable with the number "2" and the selection of images represent different phases and times of the year as well as representing different tv shows.



This has to be one of my favourite idents. It's so simple but then really memorable too.



Looking at some older idents - I would say the channel 2 ones are probably the best - they're quite simple but the most effective

It's always interesting looking at a selection of different idents. Most of these are channel specific idents rather than promoting a certain program, which makes me realise that there needs to be a balance in terms of what needs to be show in the ident of my program, it needs to give enough information about the program but then also stay true to the brand.

Roller coasters

Looking at roller coaster simulators as well as footage of the game roller coaster tycoon. The POV on roller coaster tycoon is really good as it gives you the motion that you're on the roller coaster, but the backgrounds are really distracting and don't really work, otherwise it could have been quite interesting to use stills from these videos as part of the final animation.

Decided to start looking at roller coaster videos online just to get a better sense of movement during the ride. For my sequences I want the audience to interact with what they're seeing on screen so movement is essential. The audience needs to feel as if they're part of the ride and the experience.

Roller coaster adverts

Decided that it would be a good idea to start looking at some roller coaster adverts just to give a feel of what they're like. Not just looking at adverts for the top ten roller coasters but some others too.

Alton towers - Oblivion



Quite a creepy advert if i'm honest but I think thats what make the rides appear to be more thrilling. The mix between actual footage and computer generated image is quite interesting but still appears to work really well.

Alton towers - Air



A considerably more relaxed ride so the advert really reflects that well. Again I really like the mix between the actual film footage and the computer generated images.

This is creepy. Quite an interesting concept though. I guess it does make the audience quite afraid. Which is the point of the ride.

Six Flags - Apocolypse



I think it's the music that works really well in this advert. It's quite slow paced but still really interesting and fitting for the ride.

Kingda Ka



Think the repetition of the numbers and facts works really well. And quite a good pace too, doesn't get boring and even works without audio.

Found it quite interesting to be looking at different adverts and commercials, gave me an idea what really works within them and some of the things that I would need to include in the sequences and idents.

Channel 5 Idents

Starting to look at channel 5 idents - find that most of the idents that they do tend to be film based with only a few that are animated. I think the gadget show one is quite effected as it incorporates both the film aspect and then interacting with the digital side too. Most of them are around 15 seconds - so it would quite easy to create something for 10 seconds.

Motion Graphics - Examples

Began looking at some interesting examples of motion graphics and other moving image, really like the way in which both and type and image work quite well together.

Always likes 02 adverts and this one is quite interesting. I always find that the screen grabs are just as interesting as the actual motion of the adverts.

 

Like the way in which the background changes colour, and again the combination of type and image is really interesting.

Love kinetic type and this is a great example of it, really good although I'm not sure about using loads of different colours in the one sequence, might have been more interesting with just a selective colour palette.

 

This one for The Guardian is a really simple one but then probably quite easy to re create, pretty interesting and represents The Guardian quite well.

This one just blew my mind, always wondered how this type of animation is created, the movement of the ribbons is really interesting and works well in the way in which the type is revealed.
